Oct-Dec. 2015 Contest Winner – Viktoriya Nesterenko My name is Viktoriya Nesterenko and I am a part of a small amateur school studio called Nestergal creative school studio, based in Odessa. I have a license for Ipi Mocap Studio 2.0 Standard Edition and all the body motion capture for this Demoreel was made with this version of Ipi Soft with 6 Play Station 3 Eye cameras and 7×7 capture area. We used also Sony Move controllers for head and hands tracking.

Oct-Dec. 2015 Contest Winner – Nic Ebinger A ton of the shots were created with mocap or at least used some mocap as a base animation to work off of. There are about 100+ shots in the short so it’s hard to tell you exactly which shots. I put a few examples in the behind the scenes video. As a guide… 80% of the character animation in any of the hotel shots was mocap. 100% of the alley shots were mocap. none of the casino montage shots were mocap because of how short each clip is. Infected animations outside the hotel were not mocap.

July-September 2015 Contest Winner is Dirk Erdmann & Robert Schnüll We are Robert and Dirk from Germany. As the team behind UniversVFX, we made a Sci-Fi short film about a society, in which the implementation of humanoid robot is tested. You could imagine that it is set about 10 years before Will Smith is fighting the robots in iRobot. To get the animations for the created robot that we wanted we decided very early to do it using motion capture. Since our budget was absolute nothing we looked around for affordable or free solutions. Using the trial version of iPi Studio and two borrowed Microsoft Kinect cameras, we had our own, diy motion capture studio. We loved the way we were able to do quick performances and implementing it in Cinema 4D, which we used to animate and render the robot. Using this software and to be able to use the new kinect camera or a bunch of them seems to be the ideal solution for starting, low-budget filmmakers and 3D- artist.

The animation was transferred to Maya for secondary motion and rendering. The finished piece was composited in Nuke. December 2013 iPi Competition Winner is Harry Callaghan with “Portal – Christmas 2013″ All of the animations for the bipedal humanoid bots were captured using a single Kinect and Ipi Mocap Studio 2. Ipi Mocap was so quick and easy to use, and offers fantastic results, even with a single Kinect sensor and a confined space. It sped up the animation process considerably and allowed me to add natural emotion to the robotic characters.

Survival of the Fittest
November 2013 iPi Competition Winner is Zachariah Scott Survival of the fittest is a quick little short which was a finalist in valves saxxy awards this year. It was a quick project designed to get a feel for the software, and I am extremely pleased with he results ipisoft allowed me to achieve. All body animation was created using the ipisoft program, with minimal hand keyed cleanup for the character fingers and faces. The thing that impresses me most about ipisoft though , is the massive boon to production speed it provides. I was able to build the entire short in a mere two days, with only 6-8 hours spent dealing with animation capture and processing. This software is blisteringly fast and efficient when placed in the right hands. I’m seeing serious improvements in my animation pipeline, with massive gains in speed and fidelity thanks to this wonderful software.
The Battle of Miridem
October 2013 iPi Competition Winner is Patrik Hjalmarsson I’m using two Kinect cameras along with the standard edition of iPi software. I calibrated the two cameras with a flat rectangular plywood. Scenes in this trailer that includes animations that are standing still, walking and running is all done with recorded motion capture with iPiSoft. Some scenes are keyframed when it comes to certain delicate movements with hands and weapons. Scenes are rendered in 3ds Max and composed in After Effects.

It was made before the two actors support was available, so I had to limit the movement of the actors, to avoid occlusion between characters. Then, I processed the two actors separately, one by one. so that each reaction and sword movement would be in sync. I used 2 kinect and 2 psmoves to track the wrists’ position.

Take on Blake, Dunk Challenge is a Facebook application game that allows players to compete in a slam dunk contest against NBA star Blake Griffin. Designed in a 3-D format, gamers can also capture screen shots of their best slam dunks and set these images as their profile page picture.

iPi Motion Capture software was used by London-based design animation studio We Are Formation to create a new Facebook game for auto maker Kia called ‘Take On Blake’. The software was used to create character animation based on Los Angeles Clippers star forward Blake Griffin to provide realistic slam dunks and other basketball moves. 3D design and animation for a promotional flash game ‘Take On Blake’ developed by Unit9.

July 2013 iPi Competition Winner is Michael Davydov Almost every animation was made with the help of two Microsoft Kinects and an iPi Soft DMC. Except for running sequences and a few other animations, like the first shot with Guard standing in front of a door, animation of one Guard in ambush, close-ups. Every animation was then refined with the build-in filters of iPi DMC, then brought into 3ds max CAT rig, and adjusted and refined further there. We also used Endorphin to create ragdoll dynamics in the starship scene. Kinects were upgraded with vibro-motors. One was made from a USB fan, and another was made from an old shaver. Vibrations helped to isolate pattern projections for each kinect, and make overall quality of recordings about 2 times better. Can’t wait to get my hand on Kinect 2.0, I hope iPi guys are ready to add support for them as soon as possible, after the release!

Entire video was recorded, processed, and rendered over a period of about 6 hours.
